Chapter 14

“No,” Captain Seveh said bluntly. “Absolutely not.”

“I agree,” Karim muttered.

Desfan frowned. “I don’t see the problem. We all want to catch the Storm Raiders, and our ship is overcrowded. So let’s commandeer the first ship we see and split up. Some of us can take the passengers to Dorma while the rest of us go after the pirates.”

“We don’t know which way they went,” Seveh said. “We’d be sailing in circles.”

“But we might stumble across them.”

Seveh grunted. “And I assume you’re volunteering to be on the other ship?”

Desfan nodded. “I can fight better than some of your men, and it was my idea.”

“Even if it wouldn’t be a foolish venture, I’m not telling the serjan that I sent his son on an inferior ship to play avenging hero.”

“But—”

“We will go after them,” the captain promised. “And they will be found. But we will recruit help in Dorma. We will bring in other members of the patrol fleet, and we will stop them. But we need a wider net.”

Desfan hated that the captain was making sense. It was ruining his plans. “We’re still a week away from Dorma.”

“We’ll be there soon enough.” The captain set his hands on his hips. “Now, I think we need to discuss the fact that the whole ship is whispering about you—Serjah Desfan Cassian, sailing on a patrol ship.”

Desfan waved a dismissive hand. “It wasn’t exactly a secret.”

“Not among the crew. But I don’t think the serjan would want the sea at large to know where you are.”

Maybe because he’d be embarrassed for throwing Desfan out?

“He won’t appreciate the increase in danger,” Seveh said firmly, as if reading Desfan’s thoughts. “It was never the plan for all of Eyrinthia to know you were on a patrol ship.”

Desfan shrugged. “Well, it’s out now. What do you expect me to do about it?”

“Try not to tell anyone exactly what you’re doing here. They don’t need to know you’ll be sailing on the Phoenix for a year.”

“Nine months,” Desfan corrected automatically.

The captain rolled his eyes. “You understand my point?”

He sighed. “Yes.”

“Good.” The captain leaned back. “Now, why don’t you get down to the galley before all the breakfast is gone?”
